City proposing $10 million in emergency funding in response to skyrocketing electricity fees

VCC says it's pleased to the City moving forward with some relief for Calgarians living on low incomes

    The City of Calgary is proposing to allocate $10 million in emergency funding in response to skyrocketing electricity fees. VCC's Ameera Shivji discussed the extra funding with the Calgary Herald's Matt Scace, noting it would be a welcome addition to programs like the Basic Needs Fund. The Basic Needs Fund provides emergency financial assistance fund for in-need Calgarians.

    115,000 Calgarians are at extreme risk of becoming unhoused

    Relatively small policy interventions, such as a 10% reduction in rents or a 10% increase in incomes, can significantly reduce the number of people at risk of homelessness.
